A plane's black box is actually orange, it records crucial data, and can withstand temperatures of more than 1000 degrees Celsius, as aviation expert David Barry explains.

The black boxes from Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 have been finally handed over by pro-Russian separatists to Malaysian officials.

The recorders are expected to shed light on the reasons for the plane's crash and could help investigators find out who was responsible for the catastrophe.

But what do they record? Why are they not black? Can they survive any impact?

Aviation expert David Barry from Cranfield University explains how a black box actually works.
